Experts from three French research and development agencies namely the French Institute for Research and Development (IRD), the French Agency for Development (AFD) and the Debt Reduction Development Contract (C2D) have expressed the need to map out a working platform with the Local Materials Promotion Authority –MIPROMALO. This is one of the major outcomes of a visit paid by top officials of the above-mentioned institutions on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 to MIPROMALO’s Multi-purpose Centre (CPN) situated at the Nkolbisson neighbourhood in Yaounde.
Officials of the French research and development agencies wanted to have firsthand information and appreciate the production capacity and expertise of MIPROMALO as well as her intervention in the housing sector within the Centre Region in line with the eventual creation of a National Centre for Bio geoscience. While at the Nkolbisson Multi-purpose Centre, the team was received by the Director General of MIPROMALO, Dr Likiby Boubakar who was accompanied by some of his close collaborators amongst them the Director of the Multi-purpose Centre and a representative of the institution’s follow up unit.

The Director General of MIPROMALO made a succinct presentation of the institution with emphasis on the various building materials produced at the Centre. Dr Likiby Boubakar said the Centre produces materials categorized into two main types namely ceramic materials which include the different types and formats of fired bricks while the second category are the micro concrete materials with products like pavers, roofing and floor tiles, cement blocks of various sizes). In addition to this, the Director General also indicated that MIPROMALO has a team of seasoned engineers, architects and technicians who work in the design/conception and supervision of construction projects carried out by MIPROMALO.
A guided tour of the various production units operating at the Nkolbisson Multi-purpose Centre then took place with the Director General of MIPROMALO briefing the delegation at each stop. The questions raised by the experts received adequate responses and at the end of the visit, the officials from the French research and development agencies expressed satisfaction with the installations at the Centre, their functioning thereby signaling an eventual working collaboration with MIPROMALO.

Nwanjo Nsangue Elie during his presentation

The Divisional Officer for Yaoundé VII Sub Division, Nwanjo Nsangue Elie has lauded the efforts put in place by the management of the Local Materials Promotion Authority (MIPROMALO) in developing the housing sector in Cameroon. The senior administrator made the statement while visiting the institution’s Multipurpose Centre at Nkolbisson on December 16, 2020. Mr Nwanjo Nsangue Elie, who visited institutions operating under his jurisdiction intimated that the Head of State’s anticipated vision of creating MIPROMALO was to curb the continuous importation of building materials from the Western World meanwhile the country is endowed with enormous local resources. Reason why he said he was so amazed visiting the Nkolbisson Centre and seeing the variety of production units operating there.

He however requested the authorities of the institution to work on a vast expansion programme which will cover the entire territory (regions) so that Cameroonians can benefit from these products. He equally recommended workers of the company to promote the use of these materials by building their own houses with local materials. The seasoned administrator who indicated that he is an adept of local materials emphasized on the need for the management of MIPROMALO to redouble efforts and develop the sector.

Earlier, the Director General’s representative, made a general presentation of MIPROMALO. He drilled the DO and his entourage of the institution’s research and development activities spread in many parts of the country notably the Head Office found in Yaounde VI with laboratories and other facilities, Regional Centres in Bamenda, Garoua and Maroua as well as specialized antennas in Ngaoundere, Dibombari and Ekondo Titi. He further listed a number of products MIPROMALO is presently fabricating stating that the quality remains undoubtedly the best.

In a brief working session that ensued, some top officials of the company presented some of the difficulties the Centre is experiencing in delivering the much needed results, amongst others, the irregular supply of electricity and water. The Divisional Officer said the problem of  electricity remains a general nightmare to Cameroonians but advised that the Ministry of Water Resources and Energy could be contacted for the installation of solar panels that could eventually solve the problem.

A guided tour of the various production units under operation at the Centre took place. The DO and his entourage were opportune to visit the micro concrete production unit currently producing floor and roofing tiles, cement blocks of various categories, pavers, then the specialized mechanical fabrication unit and the fired bricks production unit. At each stop, the DO and his team were drilled on the materials produced, their advantages and questions raised were given the appropriate explanations. It was a satisfactory visit as Nwanjo Nsangue Elie who expressed his encouragements to the management team of MIPROMALO.

South Governor, Nguele Nguele Felix has opined that Cameroon stands a better chance of advancing in nation building if locally fabricated materials are given the pride of place in Cameroon. The South Region’s chief executive made the assertion while chairing activities marking the 2020 edition of the excellence days of scientific research and innovation for the south region organized at the Ebolowa Cercle Municipal from the 25th through the 26th of November 2020.

Governor Nguele Nguele Felix, while visiting MIPROMALO’s stand, appreciated the variety of locally fabricated products exhibited by the institution. From his declarations, one would say without fear nor favour that the newly developed building materials (standardized cement products of varying types) caught the attention of the seasoned administrator. Though not a newcomer when it comes to local materials, the governor said the production of these materials remain a major life wire for socio-economic development in Cameroon. He then went further and sought to know why the institution has still not been installed in the region, given that it is endowed with enormous natural resources especially in the domain of construction. The governor was given the assurance that MIPROMALO has already acquired a site in the region and production units will be installed in the nearest future.

Just like the governor, many visitors who stopped at MIPROMALO’S stand could not hide their feelings and they singly or generally manifested their liking for the beautiful products exhibited. While inquiring to know how cost effective the products are, some amongst them even solicited the authorities to focus on developing the local materials sector as this will curb foreign importation of building materials thereby giving home industries the opportunity to flourish.

Organized for the first time since its inception in the town of Mbalmayo, headquarters of the Nyong and So’o Division, the 2020 Excellence Days of Scientific Research and Innovation for the Centre Region – JERSIRC saw the active participation of the Local Materials Promotion Authority (MIPROMALO). From the secretary general of the region right down to other authorities in their various ranks each expressed satisfaction as regards the variety of products exhibited by the institution at the two-day event in Mbalmayo.

The event was a veritable occasion for MIPROMALO to once more showcase her technical know-how in the domain of developing and promoting the use of locally produced materials for construction and other aspects. This was done through the exhibition of a variety of the products the institution produces in her production units. Featuring prominently amongst these products are the newly developed standardized cement products of various types notably the foundation blocks, wall blocks of 15’ and 12’ as well as the decking blocks. These products, owing to their resistance capacities, attracted many visitors to the institution’s stand set up at the esplanade of the Mbalmayo party hall that played host to the event. The curious visitors sought to know among other questions, the resistance of the products, the cost as compared to non-standardized products, their availability, possibilities of setting up such production units in the locality of Mbaymayo. All these worries were clarified by the team of experts from the institution’s communication and local materials promotion units that were on hand to entertain such issues from the public.

Numerous visitors continued pouring into the institution’s stand with a lot of admiration for her products and services offered to the public. Though not very far off from her installations in Yaounde, most Mbalmayo denizens equally expressed their fervent wish to see the production units set up in their town as this will go a long way to curb the rising cost of accessing decent housing in the town.
